Canned meats, meals-in-a-can, oatmeal, cereal, peanut butter and jelly were collected on Saturday, September 6 by the MI High School Islanders Football Team. “These are the very items that football players eat to stay healthy and strong,” said one player.
In total 1,800 units of non-perishable food items we collected at the Islanders Footbal Team first-ever Back-to-School Food Drive. Their goal is to end hunger by stocking up the shelves at the Mercer Island Youth & Family Services Food Bank – located in Luther Burbank Park. The Food Bank averages over 100 visits each month. This food drive helped restock the Food Bank at a time of year when supplies are very low. Additionally, cash donations totaled $600. These monies will be used to purchase food for the Food Bank as well.
This will become an annual event for the Mercer Island Football Team, to show appreciation to the community for their continuing support of the football program.
Thank our Islanders players when you see them, and look for them at local grocery and drug stores next September!
